Horizon 2020

Horizon 2020

Horizon 2020 is the European Union's research and innovation funding project for the 2014-2020 period. It follows on from the 7th research and technological development framework programme which applied from 2007 to 2013.

It brings together the former 7th Framework Programme; Eratom; the Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme (CIP), as well as the European Institute of Innovation & Technology (EIT).

With this new programme, the European Union will finance interdisciplinary projects likely to meet the major European economic and social challenges. It will cover the entire innovation chain, from the idea to the market, and will reinforce support for the commercialisation of the results of research and the creativity of companies.

Horizon 2020 has a budget of €79 billion for the 2014-2020 period in order to support projects by research and innovation stakeholders, who may be researchers, universities, research centres, small and large companies. The first call for projects was launched on 11 December 2013.

The main challenges of H2020

  • to reinforce the position of the European Union in the world in the fields of research, innovation and technologies;

  • to ensure the competitiveness of Europe by investing in technologies and professions of the future, at the service of "intelligent, sustainable and inclusive" growth;

  • to reinforce the attractiveness of the Europe of research;

  • to take account of citizens' concerns (health, environment, clean energies, etc.) and offer responses to society's challenges.

The H2020 programme is divided into three priorities (pillars):

Excellent science
  • to promote basic research and open new paths to future and emerging technologies by supporting collaborative and interdisciplinary research and following innovative methods of thinking;

  • to equip Europe with world class research facilities accessible to all researchers from Europe and elsewhere;

  • to support the mobility of European researchers and those from third countries to and outside Europe.

Industrial leadership

This section will help to:

  • Reinforce European leadership in generic and industrial technologies with specific support for ICT, nanotechnologies, advanced materials, biotechnology, advanced manufacturing and processing and space through support for research between industry and the public sector,

  • Facilitate companies access to risk finance;

  • Support innovation in SMEs (a sub-programme is devoted specifically to them)

Societal challenges

 This section will support interdisciplinary projects which provide responses to the major societal challenges, namely:

  • Health, demographic change and well-being;

  • Food security, sustainable agriculture and forestry, marine and maritime and inland water research, and the bioeconomy;
